Santiago is a fantastic place to go to learn Spanish. It's
an exciting, bustling city set against a backdrop of the most
beautiful mountain range in Chile.
But if you want to go to learn Spanish in Santiago because
you are attracted by the idea of the beautiful Chilean
landscape, you might want to consider another more rural place
to visit. Santiago is a hectic, overcrowded and unfortunately
quite polluted town. True party-lovers and city-lovers fall in
love with Satiago but nature-lovers tend to hate it.
That said, the majority of people who go to learn Spanish in
Santiago have a great time because once you get used to the
noise and hecticness, you soon discover the exciting side to
the city, the massive variety of things to do and places to eat
and go out and the warm, fun-loving Santiago people. It's also
a great city to use as a base of operations to see the rest of
Chile, as you can shoot out for a day trip to do anything from
climbing in the mountains, to skiing to surfing, to
jungle-trecking.
If you seriously want to learn Spanish in Santiago as
rapidly as you can, then it's best that when you get there you
try to immerse yourself in the real Santiago culture and get to
know the local people. Quite a few people go to learn Spanish
in Santiago with all the best intentions but end up spending
most of their time with other English speakers and practising
their English more than their Spanish!
So if you can be strong and keep it all Spanish you will be
rewarded. It's not unusual for people to go from beginner to a
decent level of fluency in a matter of 3 months - if they speak
Spanish the whole time they are there.
Learn With the Locals
The best way to learn Spanish in Santiago is not to depend
on a school to teach you. You can get all the grammar and vocab
you need from a few good books or better yet, a good home-study
Spanish course. As you will be surrounded by Spanish speakers
to practise with all day long, you really only need to learn
the basic structure of the language and your first few clumps
of vocabulary before you can get out there and start talking
for real. This is how you will learn Spanish in Santiago at
maximum speed.
If you are just planning to learn Spanish in Santiago but
aren't yet at all familiar with the city. It is the capital and
largest city of Chile, and is situated in Chile's central
valley. Twenty years of uninterrupted economic growth have
turned Santiago into one of Latin America's most modern
metropolitan areas, with extensive suburban development, dozens
of shopping malls, and impressive high-rise architecture. You
will also find some of South America's most modern
transportation infrastructure, such as the growing Santiago
Metro.
Santiago has also developed an awesome nightlife and bar
scene over this period. The most lively areas are Barrio
Bellavista and the Suecio Strip in Provicencia. Be warned, the
people of Santiago like to party all night - many bars and
discos don't even open until 1am! If you are a fun-loving type
then it is a great idea to visit and learn Spanish in
Santiago.
